Ivo Mortelmans started his music studies, against the will of his father Lodewijk Mortelmans at the Antwerp Music Conservatory.
He obtained first prices for musical apprentice, orgue and harmony.
His father gaved him his first lessons of counterpoint, after which he studied more at the Conservatory of Brussels with Paul Gilson and Paulin Marchand.

He worked as pedagogue at the Antwerp Conservatory, aswell at various music academies in Antwerp.
Between 1930 and 1932 he even was director of the Music School at Eindhoven.
Until 1944 he conducted various harmonies and choirs, and wrote music critics for the newspaper 'Gazet van Antwerpen'.

Ivo Mortelmans wrote mainly vocale compositions for which religion, nature and the flemish folkspirit were his main inspiration sources.

He wrote a numbre of masses, amongst which 'Missadona novis pacem' (1927) and the 'Missa Benedicamus Domino' (1945), but also various religious choir chants such as 'De hemelvaart van Maria' (1952), 'Drie Mariagezangen' (1956) and the cantate 'Priestercantate' (1947).
Further his work consists of chambre music and orchestral works.

All works and personal documents of Ivo Mortelmans were donated to the Study Centre for Flemish Musique by the inheritants.
Afterwards the file was registerd at the Library of the Departement of Dramatic Art, Music and Dance of the Highschool Antwerpen.
